Understanding Mobile Phone Contracts

The mobile phone industry in the UK has always been a buoyant market whatever the economic outlook, fuelled by our desire to always possess the latest and greatest gadget and facilitated by our disposable income and the ever growing essentiality of owning a mobile phone. This is why UK mobile phone retailers have been able to shrug off the current credit crunch and still turn a profit, and why for a country with 60 million inhabitants there are over 70 million active mobile phones. With such a competitive market full of people always migrating from one provider to the other there are plenty of top notch bargains to be had, and depending on your needs there`s almost certainly a mobile phone contract that`s right for you. To help you choose you`ll need to grasp some of the basics about mobile contracts.

Pay as you go
The most basic and unrestricted type of mobile deal is a Pay as you go package. This will usually include a mobile handset and a SIM card registered to a particular network. Once you`ve paid for the phone you`ll only be charged as and when you make calls or send text or multimedia messages, and you`ll need to keep your phone topped up with credit either via phone or at correctly equipped shops. If you already have a working handset there are SIM only deals available which mean you`ll just get sent a SIM card, and many from networks like O2 will give you privileges like free off peak texts or calls to other customers on the same network.

Fixed Term Contract
Many people opt for a fixed term contract, usually running for a period of between 12 and 24 months, with an average 18 month term to be expected. Over the period you will pay a fixed monthly fee of anywhere between £9 and upwards. For this monthly fee you`ll get a `free` phone and a set amount of free minutes and texts which you can use as you see fit. Once you`ve exceeded the limit for your free texts and minutes in a given month you`ll be required to pay extra on top of your monthly fee for additional usage. Also bear in mind that services like mobile internet will be charged on top of your bill unless you purchase a deal which specifically covers these extras. Contracts are great if you know exactly how many calls or texts you`re likely to make in a given month, and it`s also the best way to get the latest phone handsets without having to pay for them all in one go.

Network Providers and Deals
Just like shopping for broadband in the UK, making sure you get the right mobile contract can be tricky, and once you`ve committed you`ll need to keep the contract for the duration or else suffer financial penalties for early exit. Different providers also offer different incentives to sign on with them, so comparison online will avoid disappointment.
