Tutorials - Binary Newsgroups

1. Introduction
2. Setup Newsbin
3. Download Files with Newsbin
4. Convert Downloaded Files
5. Music and Other Types of Files

4. Convert Downloaded Files

This part of the tutorial assumes you have downloaded and installed Winrar v362 and Quickpar 9.2

Before you do anything else navigate to the folder containing the files you just finished downloading, right click on the folder and scan it with your AV scanner for viruses. If you find any your Antivirus Scanner will quarantine the virus, then delete the folder and run a full antivirus scan.

When your download is complete the files will be in the "newsbin" folder you set up in My Documents. They will be in .rar format and some .par files if its a large file ie video. Other possibilities are .bin, .cue, .zip but these are not common mostly your files will be .rar which is why you need Winrar.

In this case when the Babylon5 Episode you downloaded as part of this tutorial was uploaded to Usenet it started life as an ordinary video.avi file. To upload it the poster used Winrar to split it into 30 parts and uploaded them in sequence to the usenet server, now you have the 30 parts you have to reverse the process and re-build the original video.avi file.

1. Do your virus scan then open the newsbin folder, you will see the following screen. The first file with the Newsbin Logo - ths is a .nzb file and is not required, ignore it. Look at the second file which is highlighted below, you will see it is a .par2 file, following this are the .rar video files then more par2 files. The par2 files check and repair the video files I have no idea how this works it just does. If the video.rar files are missing parts or corrupted which is not uncommon the par files will fix them. Double click the 1st par 2 file (this is always the first file and is the index for the par files at the end) and quickpar will start and automatically check the and repair the .rar files

2. You will see Quickpar run through its routines and pe presented with this screen at the end, takes a few minutes. This set of rar files checked out OK, if you need to repair, the "Repair" button at the bottom right will be activated and Quickpar will display a message that it is "ready to repair" - click the repair button and it magically fixes the .rar files.

3. Once you have checked and repaired if necessary the .rar files with Quickpar you need to extract the video from them To do this right click on the first .rar file in the sequence and select Winrar > "Extract to BS***" from the drop down menus. This action extracts and rebuilds the original video file from the .rar files and puts it in a folder called whatever the name on the first .rar is.

4. You will see a progress bar as Winrar does its thing, when it is finished you will see a folder has been created, your video is in the folder. Right click and Virus Scan this folder before you open it. When you open it your video will be there ready to go, double click it to play in your chosen Media Player or use a DVD burner to burn it to disc and play on your domestic DVD player.

5. When you have got the video out you can save it elsewhere and delete all the .rar and par2 files, you don't need them any more.

If you have problems playing the video or burning it to a DVD I am doing more how tos on these subjects, not ready yet though so contact me if you have any problems.
