Why Not Guernsey Chat Tutorial - By Maisiecat

A newbies guide to Chat…

You may have been a forum user for ages but never found chat, or if you did find it, were unsure how to get the most from it. Chat is rarely busy in WNG before 9 or 10 pm but it is available any time for users to go in and chat. Some nights around a dozen users can be active which is when you will be grateful for different colours and avatars (though some people prefer no colours or avatars on their set up. .user choice!)

Firstly, there are two ways to get into chat from the menu screen... firstly by the link in the top right hand side under the banner…

Or secondly there is a second way in, near the bottom of the same page where any users already active in chat will be shown. Here there are options of how you want the window, I usually choose new window but the pop up options work too, user choice.

OK, so we are in.. now you will notice I have a little cat avatar alongside my user name in the active users list on the right of the page, and my background is a sea scene. This is all customisable and accessed from the “options” button at the bottom left, above the box you type your messages in

Click Options and then the tab effects and you will find a range of avatars to choose from using the up and down arrows, remember to tick the two boxes on the left of those to apply them.

To customise your background use the Themes tab and experiment until you find something that suits. Screens of blue seem to be most popular and if you choose a blue font from the font colour list you will usually find several people will tell you they can't read what you write so blue as posting colour is best avoided.

I like my pastel pink.

If you want to make a statement that starts “username” you can type /me

and the result will appear in the active window like this…

Ok, so you want a Private Chat with someone in the active user list? Left click on the user and a drop down list will appear, this gives you a range of options but if you click on "Private Message" a small window will appear that is private to just the two of you. This is also where you can invite someone into another room, share pictures or view a users profile.

OK, more advanced stuff now.. for fun you can create a new room

using the” add” button next to the default room lounge you can name your room, make it public or private and set a password if you want. You do need to go into your room straight away or it will disappear, when you have created it you use the little down arrows to the left of the Add bottom you can scroll down to your new room and click on it, you will then move into the new room.

From there you can invite people to join you, again using the left click on the users function, if you have password protected the room be sure to give the password and unless there is a good reason to exclude anyone it is good manners to invite everyone who enters the lounge to your room.

Left click and select invite and if there is a password, be sure to tell everyone!

If you are invited to another room a pop up appears and you accept. Fun isn't it??

Now get in there and enjoy Chat!
